Recent Kitchen Remodel? Reuse the Old Cabinets!
September 20, 2024

After you have had your kitchen remodeled, you can transform your old kitchen cabinets to suit various organizational and functional needs throughout your home. If you’re a handy or crafty person, these can be fun projects, plus you’re helping the environment by keeping the old cabinets out of the landfill.
Garage, laundry room, craft room, or workshop storage: Mount the cabinets on the walls to store tools, gardening or laundry supplies, paint cans, or any other items you need to keep organized. You can also use them as a folding or ironing station.
Convert wall cabinets to shelving units: Store craft supplies, sewing materials, and DIY tools in the cabinets in a craft room. Paint them bright colors to store toys, books, art supplies, and games in the kids’ playroom.
Home office organization: Repurpose the cabinets in your home office to store files, office supplies, and electronics. Add a desktop, drawers or shelves for office supplies, and a chair. Customize the desk height and width based on your needs.
Entryway or mudroom bench: Transform a lower cabinet into a storage bench for your entryway. Remove the doors, add a cushion to the top, and use the interior for storage for shoes, pet supplies, bags, and outdoor gear. In the mudroom, hang wall cabinets above for even more storage for things like scarves, gloves, and flashlights, and place hooks on the wall for a place to hang coats.
Floating bathroom vanity: Turn a small cabinet into a floating vanity for your bathroom. Cut a hole in the top for the sink, add plumbing fixtures, and install the cabinet on the wall. Use the remaining space for storing toiletries.
Outdoor options: If the cabinets are weatherproof or can be treated for outdoor use, there are several creative ways they can be repurposed. Use them to create an outdoor kitchen or bar area. Or use them as outdoor storage for gardening tools, patio cushions, or pool supplies. Convert a cabinet into a potting bench for your garden by adding a work surface, hooks for hanging tools, and storage for pots, soil, and gardening accessories. Transform a cabinet into an outdoor bar cart by adding wheels for mobility, a countertop for serving drinks, and storage for barware and beverages.
Bedroom furniture: Convert a cabinet into a vanity or dressing table for your bedroom or bathroom. Add a mirror, lighting, and a stool or chair. The drawers can be used for storing makeup, hair accessories, and grooming supplies. A small cabinet can become a nightstand beside your bed. All you need to do is add a tabletop for a lamp, alarm clock, and books. Store nighttime essentials like tissues, books, or electronics in the drawers below. You can even turn old cabinets into a “built-in” bed, like the one in the picture above!
No matter what projects your old kitchen cabinets turn into, they will be welcome additions to any room in your house. And you might even have some fun in the process!
