Food Preservation from a Farmer’s Wife

When you marry into a family of multi-generational farmers, the emphasis on food preservation becomes instantly apparent. Growing up in a suburb, I’ve always been aware of the diligence required for caring for plants and tending to flower beds. However, nothing could’ve prepared me for the dedication of a farming family and their craft. Witnessing their blood, sweat, and tears gave me a completely new perspective on the value of food.

Thankfully, there are brands on the market that are built on the same values as my farming family. Companies such as SubZero, GE, and Samsung offer refrigeration with dual evaporators, allowing food to be preserved properly by separating the air between the refrigerator and freezer compartments. Other advantages include maintaining freshness through higher humidity levels in the fresh food sections as well as preventing freezer burn using lower humidity levels for frozen sections. This helps to eliminate pungent smells that would otherwise travel between sections.

In my own home, the most valuable appliance for food preservation is our FoodSaver Vacuum Sealer. FoodSaver: Keep Food Fresh with Quality Vacuum Sealers Most of our protein is acquired in bulk from a butcher, making it integral for our food to be saved for long periods of time without losing its quality or freshness. For us, the FoodSaver certainly lives up to its name! It is great for dividing out proteins as well as preparing and saving meals for future consumption. The only issue, however, is that once you have sealed your food and are ready to store it, you may find yourself facing another dilemma essential for food preservation – more freezer and storage space!
